I created this project as a way to incorporate more engineering design thinking into my general curriculum. In it, students engage directly with the concept of climate change by creating some of their own, applicable changes in building design to passively cool houses without the use of excess electricity. They design and build a small model house to test their solutions. To make it more fun, I build up a contest around their model testing, with the teams house that heats up the least over a certain period of time winning. (The contest is for a fun prize, not for grade points. The only grade comes from the written report submitted by the group, and individual peer-evaluations of how each group members contributed to the project). I originally created this project as part of a Biology ecology unit but it also works extremely well for Earth and Space Sciences.
